SSC JE 2026: Everything You Need to Know About the Junior Engineer Recruitment Notice
The Staff Selection Commission (SSC) has released its official notice for the Junior Engineer Examination 2026, opening up 1,748 tentative vacancies across major central government organizations. If you're a diploma or degree holder in Civil, Mechanical, Electrical, or related engineering fields, this could be your shot at a stable Group 'B' government job. What Posts Are Up for Grabs?
This isn't a single-department drive — it spans 14 different organizations, including the Border Roads Organisation (BRO), Central Public Works Department (CPWD), Central Water Commission, Military Engineer Services (MES), Department of Telecommunications, and even the India Meteorological Department (IMD), which is hiring for Scientific Assistant posts through this same exam.
All posts fall under Group 'B', Level-6 of the 7th CPC Pay Matrix (₹35,400–112,400).
Broadly, the openings fall into these streams:
JE (Civil)
JE (Electrical)
JE (Mechanical)
JE (Electrical & Mechanical) — combined post in some departments
JE (Telecom)
Scientific Assistant (IMD)
Educational requirements vary slightly by organization, but generally you'll need either a degree in the relevant engineering discipline, or a three-year diploma plus two years of relevant work experience. Age Limit
The cutoff date for age calculation is August 1, 2026.
Most posts: upper age limit of 30 years (born between August 2, 1996 and August 1, 2008)
CPWD and Lighthouses & Lightships posts: upper age limit of 32 years (born between August 2, 1994 and August 1, 2008)
Standard age relaxations apply — 5 years for SC/ST, 3 years for OBC, up to 15 years for PwBD candidates in the SC/ST category, and relaxations for Ex-Servicemen as well.
Application Fee
General fee: ₹100
Exempted categories: Women candidates, SC, ST, PwBD, and Ex-Servicemen pay no fee at all.
Payment can only be made online — via BHIM UPI, net banking, or debit cards (Visa, MasterCard, Maestro, RuPay).
Exam Pattern
The selection process runs through two Computer-Based Examination papers:
Paper-I (2 hours, qualifying in nature):
General Intelligence & Reasoning — 50 questions
General Awareness — 50 questions
Relevant Engineering discipline (Part A–G based on your post) — 100 questions
Negative marking: 0.25 marks deducted per wrong answer.
Paper-II (2 hours, counts toward final merit):
Engineering discipline paper — 100 questions worth 300 marks
Negative marking: 1 full mark deducted per wrong answer.
Both papers are bilingual (Hindi and English) and purely objective/MCQ-based. Candidates eligible for a scribe get an extra 40 minutes.
Minimum qualifying marks are 30% for UR, 25% for OBC/EWS, and 20% for all other reserved categories.
How Selection Works
Merit lists are prepared separately for JE (Civil), JE (Electrical & Mechanical), JE (Telecom), and Scientific Assistant (IMD). Paper-I only qualifies you for Paper-II — it's your Paper-II score, combined with your post preferences, that determines final allocation. Note that once you lock in your post preferences, they're final and cannot be changed later, so choose carefully.
A Few Important Things to Note
BRO posts are for male candidates only, and come with strict physical efficiency and medical standards.
Candidates should complete One-Time Registration (OTR) on the SSC website before applying — old OTRs from the previous SSC website won't carry over.
Aadhaar-based authentication is recommended, as it exempts you from certain photo/signature rejection rules.
Selected candidates carry an All India Service Liability (AISL), meaning you could be posted anywhere in the country.
There's a two-year probation period after appointment.
